United Airlines is betting that it does, by plunking down $3B for 15 aircraft from Boom Technology’s Overture Aircraft. The jets will fly twice as fast as conventional planes, making trips from Tokyo to San Francisco for example, 6 hours long versus the previous ~11 hours. These new planes fly faster than the Concorde, breaking sound barrier only over the ocean, and cost 75% less to operate while using fully sustainable aviation fuel with a target for net zero carbon emissions. The jets will be ready for operation in 2029.
