Dr Tariq Aftab, associate professor with the Department of Botany at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) located in Uttar Pradesh, India, is working with seven collaborators from Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben (Germany) to identify a barley specific protein, HvHorcH, that plays an important role in conferring salt stress tolerance in barley. Such a trait has increasing value for future food production due to increasing salinity in soil in several regions of the world.
