DP World, a global port operator, successfully tested a new robotic solution for storing shipping containers. The installation is an 800-container ‘Boxbay’ vertical storage facility, installed at Jebel Ali in UAE and resulting from collaboration with German engineering company SMS Group. The main benefits are the ‘Boxbay’ has three times more capacity than a traditional stacked container yard, with a capability to stack as high as 11 boxes on steel racks. Robotic hoists can remove any box at any moment, without a need for restacking.
