The Scottish government and various industry bodies, including the Scotch Whisky Research Institute, the International Barley Hub, and the University of Dundee, are supporting 30 postgraduate research positions between 2022-2028 with an estimated funding of £9M. The research will be focused upon boosting the productivity of barley along with improving the crop’s sustainability impact on the planet (i.e., reaching net carbon zero emissions, climate resilience etc.).
